About the Doctor
Dr. Fields is a child neurologist specializing in the evaluation and treatment of children with neurodevelopmental differences and other neurologic conditions.
Why See a Neurologist for a Developmental Evaluation?
-
A neurologist's training equips them to go beyond providing a behavioral diagnosis, such as autism or ADHD, by focusing on identifying potential underlying causes of a child’s neurodevelopmental differences. Through a detailed medical history and a comprehensive neurologic examination, we evaluate the need for further testing, which may include MRI, EEG, genetic, metabolic, or nutritional assessments. Pinpointing the cause of a neurodevelopmental delay enables us to deliver a precise diagnosis, facilitating tailored treatment, accurate prognostication, informed counseling, and the avoidance of unnecessary testing.
-
Neurologists undergo extensive specialized training to master the skills required for performing thorough neurological examinations.
-
Neurologists also manage conditions that commonly co-occur with neurodevelopmental disorders. For instance, children with neurodevelopmental differences are at an increased risk of developing seizures. A neurologist can evaluate seizures using tests like EEG and provide appropriate treatment, such as prescribing anti-seizure medications, if needed.
-
Neurologists are trained to utilize and interpret diagnostic tools, such as brain imaging (MRI) and electroencephalograms (EEG), as part of the diagnostic and treatment process.
Why Choose Us?
Quality Time
I build a strong connection with each patient and their family, meeting the child right where they are. Every child has their own unique symptoms, which serve as important clues to the root cause and help create a personalized therapy plan.
In addition to recommending intensive therapies with proven effectiveness, we stay informed about cutting-edge treatments supported by peer-reviewed research.
Evidence-Based
Comprehensive Evaluations
Neurodevelopmental differences can be tricky to understand. They happen because diet, lifestyle, and things in the environment affect how our genes work, creating differences in how people develop. With careful testing and investigation, we can sometimes figure out the exact cause. Finding the cause is important because it helps us give good advice, avoid extra tests, plan for the future, and create the right treatment plan. These tests take time, so get ready to spend a while with us!
Education and Advocacy
I completed NJ Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (NJLEND) fellowship through Rutgers University’s Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities. During my fellowship, I presented a project on the benefits of inclusive employment, emphasizing the potential advantages of expanding Project SEARCH throughout the RWJBH network. Additionally, I attended the Disability Policy Seminar in Washington, D.C., where I advocated the reauthorization of the Autism Cares Act and met with Congressman Chris Smith. Recently, I started a certification program in mitochondrial medicine at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, focusing on cutting-edge advancements in this specialized field.
Integrative and Complimentary Services
We believe it is essential to start with a strong foundation, initially prioritizing lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, nutrition, and sleep. Next, we address any underlying metabolic issues identified during the evaluation. Simultaneously, we recommend intensive, personalized therapies tailored to the individual's needs. We also explore nonpharmaceutical interventions, including neurofeedback, yoga, Monarch eTNS, and Nerivio.
If necessary, we may incorporate medication alongside therapies to target specific challenges. Our goal is to use medication for a limited time, facilitating habit changes through intensive therapies. However, in some cases, long-term medication use may be required to maintain progress and well-being.
